3-D Image of a Girl Meant to Slow Down Vancouver Motorists - HULIQ.com Posted: 03 Sep 2010 07:08 PM PDT She looks so real that drivers may think they ran over a little girl on the street outside a school in Vancouver, BC. This is thanks to 3-D technology (Vancouver Sun). Clearly, 3-D has more uses than just making movies. The figure of a girl running out into traffic to catch a ball has been painted onto the road in an effort to 'jar[] drivers out of their routine' (VS). Preventable.ca has been trying to do this in BC with TV adverts showcasing the attitude that many tragedies can be prevented easily. Their web page shows a man and a child wearing backpacks which read 'You're not expecting a child to run into traffic.' Other ads have highlighted this attitude: that an accident will not happen to me; that most people do not drown at the beach, fall out of their boat when fishing, sustain major brain injury while skateboarding or cycling and so on. No one expects to die today. Safety Concerns There has been some controversy over the figure. One opinion is that she could cause an accident when someone stops suddenly in front of her, then another motorist slams into the first. A spokesperson for Preventable.ca maintains, however, that the image does not appear suddenly. Motorists will not be in the clear one minute, running over a child the next. In fact, she appears gradually, seems real for a short time, fading as one gets closer. Vancouver's illustrated elementary student will only be crossing the road temporarily. After a trial period, the police and parents will establish the success of their innovation in protecting young people from drivers and causing motorists to be more alert, especially when children are around.
