Village improves skateboard agreement

ALBION —

The Village of Albion board had good news for skateboarders and Santa Clauses on Wednesday, approving the Town of Albion's offer to help pay for skate park equipment and offering to assist with the upcoming celebration of legendary Santa Claus Charles Howard.

The Town of Albion will provide $4,000 in September toward purchasing a quarter pipe for Bullard Park as part of the inter-municipal agreement.

A group of skateboarders asked both of Albion's governments for help in improving the park after a grant for equipment was denied.

The agreement between Albion's two municipalities will benefit all of Albion's parks thanks to the persistence of the group of skateboarders behind the project, Trustee Kevin Sheehan said.

"Because of those kids, this agreement has been reached that will improve not only Bullard Park but also the rest of Albion's parks," said Sheehan, who praised the amount of work done by the skateboarders. "They made this a reality."

As part of the agreement the town will provide an additional $6,000 for each year that the agreement is renewed toward parks and recreation projects and appoint a sixth member to the village's recreation committee.

Various local governments will also be coming together to help celebrate Charles W. Howard, the Albion farmer who served as the Santa Claus for the Macy's Parade in New York City from 1948 to 1965 in addition to training a generation of St. Nick's at the world's first Santa Claus School.

According to Lou Becker, whose Erie Canal Schoolhouse Bed and Breakfast will be "transformed into North Pole Central" for the event, more than 100 professional Santa Clauses will suit up and gather in Albion on Sept. 25 as part of the Charles W. Howard Day festivities.

Becker asked the board to consider putting up Christmas decorations for the event. Mayor Dean Theodorakos said the village could put up decorations focused around courthouse square, where the visiting Santas will be performing a special dance.

Charles W. Howard Day will also feature an exhibit of the Santa Claus Oath, reindeer for petting and memorabilia from the Howard's Santa Claus School and Christmas Park.

Mark Salling: Skateboard Boy - The Gossip Girls

Posted: 27 Aug 2010 11:16 AM PDT

Staving off on-set boredom, Mark Salling was spotted skateboarding around the "Glee" studio earlier today (August 27).

The 28-year-old actor looked cool and casual in a button-up shirt and distressed jeans with Converse All-Stars as he rolled past the paparazzi.

In related news, it seems there's some bad blood between Mark and his co-star/ex-girlfriend Naya Rivera, to the point that she egged and keyed his car earlier this week.

An inside source revealed, "[Naya] is crazy. They dated, as in casually dated, for a while but it was never anything really serious. That was made clear from the beginning. There is surveillance video from a local store. Literally, you see her buying eggs! That girl is just mental."

In an attempt to suppress the drama, Mark posted a picture of himself and Naya with the caption, "silly rumors, we're the best of friends."

Enjoy the pictures of Mark Salling skateboarding to the set of "Glee" (August 27).

“Long Valley, NJ teens raise just under $10,000 on skateboard mission to Skate Cape May - Morris County Daily Record”

Long Valley, NJ teens raise just under $10,000 on skateboard mission to Skate Cape May - Morris County Daily Record

Posted: 24 Aug 2010 04:03 AM PDT

Nine days, 230 miles, several rainy downpours and an injured hip later, the two Long Valley teens who headed out to skate the state to raise money for childhood cancer two weeks ago, reached the end of their trip.

Last Wednesday, Danny Brookes and Edwin Zhang, both 16, reached their last stop at Cape May, and for the first time since they started their quest on Aug. 10, threw their skateboards in a car and drove the rest of the way back home.

So far, the teens have raised $9,000 for Alex's Lemonade Stand, a foundation that raises money for childhood cancer research. Alex's Lemonade Stand was founded by Alexandra "Alex" Scott, a young girl with cancer who held lemonade stands in her front yard to raise money for childhood cancer research. Alex died in 2004, at the age of 8.

Though, at the moment, they're just below the halfway point for their goal of $20,000, Brookes and Zhang are not discouraged.

"Even though we didn't raise our total goal of $20,000, I still feel like we made a pretty big impact," Zhang said.

Liz Scott, Alex's mother, said in an e-mail statement to the Daily Record that when she heard of Brooke's and Zhang's idea, she was "amazed that two teenage boys would be so dedicated to the fight against childhood cancer."

"These two boys are great examples of the spirit of Alex and Alex's Lemonade Stand - that anyone, at any age, can make a difference in the world. We are inspired by their commitment to this cause," Scott said.

The teens' arrival to Cape May to set up their final lemonade stand to raise money for the organization came without pomp and circumstance, but brought with it plenty of satisfaction.

"I hope that the money that we raised will help someone significantly," Brookes said. "We've put hope into a lot of people's hearts and minds.

About 100 miles into the trip, Brookes began having severe hip pain, so he took some pain medication and biked 40 miles one day, and 10 miles the next, until his tire popped. Then, he got right back on his longboard and skated the rest of the way.

When Brookes and Zhang got to Cape May, a family with a young daughter who'd survived a very rare form of childhood kidney cancer stopped by to tell the teens they appreciated what they were doing.

"It really helped us to know that we were doing something really good for a bunch of children," Brookes said.

Brookes and Zhang - who plan on making this an annual event - are still accepting donations. For more information, visit their website, www.SkateCapeMay.com.

105,000 Spectators Crowd Into Long Beach for Red Bull Flugtag Girl Power Reigns as ... - PR Inside

Posted: 22 Aug 2010 03:58 AM PDT

2010-08-22 13:01:02 - LOS ANGELES, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 08/22/10 -- Red Bull Flugtag brought many things to Long Beach today: the Spruce Goose, the Jetsons, the Flintstones and more than 105,000 spectators. The crowd was so enormous that the 710 freeway's exit ramp to the area was closed, all parking garages were at capacity and traffic was gridlocked throughout the downtown area. The hundreds of thousands that secured a spot were rewarded with the spectacle of human flight as 34 teams launched their crafts off a 30-foot flight deck in an attempt to defy gravity.

Girl power ruled the day as team Peepin' it Real floated into first place with a flight distance of 98 feet. The all-female team from Newport Beach, who are students at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and UCLA, beat out teams comprised of mechanical and aerospace engineers, U.S. Navy rescue divers and the U.S. Coast Guard. Team pilot Corinne Schnieders admitted that "This was probably the most fun I've ever had. My flight was much smoother than I'd imagined. I just floated down and landed like a marshmallow." "It was peeptastic!" added teammate Suzy Strutner. For claiming first place, team Peepin' it Real will be headed to Arizona for a flight with Red Bull Air Race World Champion, Kirby Chambliss, at his "Flying Crown Ranch."

In second place was eco-friendly team Green Machine from Las Vegas, and in third was team Airforce One who sailed into the harbor on an 8-foot tall paper mache head modeled after President Obama's head. The coveted People's Choice Award went to Green Army Men, who, despite the heat, stayed in their eye-catching head-to-toe green army men costumes the entire day.

Red Bull Flugtag, which means "flying day" in German, is a competition that dares both the brave and the brainy to design, build and pilot homemade flying machines off a 30-foot high ramp in hopes of achieving human-powered flight. While distance was definitely important, the crafts were also judged on two other criteria -- creativity and showmanship -- by a panel of celebrity judges including actor Cheech Marin, Dave "The King of Mexico" Sanchez from KROQ's "The Kevin and Bean Show," actress Nicole Sullivan, professional skateboarder Ryan Sheckler and "The Bachelor Pad" reality star Tenley Molzahn. Sheckler, who opened the event by launching himself off the flight deck on his skateboard, said, "This was amazing! We got a ton of people to show up and there were some really great crashes." Cheech Marin said simply, "Red Bull Flugtag. Is. Good."

The first Red Bull Flugtag was held in Vienna in 1991. Since then, more than 80 Red Bull Flugtags have been held around the world -- from London to San Francisco -- attracting up to 300,000 spectators at one event! The international flight distance record now stands at 207 feet and was just set in Minneapolis/St. Paul on July 24, 2010, after having stood for eight years! This is the third Red Bull Flugtag event in the U.S. this summer after stops in Miami and Minneapolis/St. Paul earlier this year where a new World Record was set with a 207-foot flight. Red Bull Flugtag is making its final U.S. stop of the year in Philadelphia on September 4th. Red Bull Flugtag Long Beach will also be featured in a reality series called "On the Wings of Glory" airing Sundays after baseball starting September 5th on FOX Sports Network.

While the teams let their imaginations soar, there were still a few rules in the sky. First off, all flying machines had to be entirely human-powered (no external energy sources or stored power). And, no matter what they say, size does matter, as all crafts had to weigh no more than 450 lbs. (including the pilot).

Backpacks for Teen Girls Offer a Huge Range of Options - Associated Content

Posted: 08 Aug 2010 11:49 PM PDT

High Sierra Wilder

I really think this backpack looks sharp in Blue Velvet and Pacific, but there were a number of other options that were just as pretty, like the pink plaid or the earthy "Forgotten Flower" pattern. This is another slim looking pack that will hold up to a 17-inch laptop computer, but it has a lot more bells and whistles than the Belkin. It features a zippered slash pocket and organizer compartment in the front, large mesh compartments for water bottles or extra storage, and padded back panel and shoulder straps. A hook and loop closure secures the cell phone pocket built into the shoulder strap. Secure pockets will also hold both an MP3 player and a PDA.

DaKine Girls Wonder Pack
Because girls can skateboard too, this DaKine backpack is a great option for your high school student. The bag comes in a huge variety of styles, from dark solids through bright floral or geometric prints. The pink plaid is hot, as are the brilliant poppy red of the Island Floral and the tie-dye look of Watercolor. The pack has bungee storage and board straps on the front, and side mesh pockets to carry water bottles or extra gear. While not designed for toting around computers or large textbooks, this is a pack that will appeal to an athletic girl who needs to carry a few paperbacks or small notebooks, extra clothing, and other small gear. The secret sunglasses pocket has a very large capacity, and by itself will hold several electronic devices as well as the glasses.

DaKine Scooler Backpack and Lunch Bag
This backpack and lunch bag ensemble is stunning in the cobalt Monoblue, but comes in a range of dark shades and cool patterns too. It's great for the girl who always has trouble keeping it all together - or for a very together girl who appreciates coordinating pieces. The insulated lunch bag fits into a front compartment of the backpack, or can be carried separately. Side expandable mesh pockets can be used to carry beverages or other gear. The pack also includes a sunglasses pocket and bungee storage with reflective details, a great feature for a girl who often leaves school after dark.

Supergirl Jam offers up snowboarding, skateboarding and inline skating Sunday at ... - Los Angeles Times

Calgary's Leanne Pelosi rides the rail in the 2009 Supergirl Jam Snowboard Rail Jam contest in Venice Beach.

Venice Beach will be the site Sunday for the Supergirl Jam, the next event of the 2010 Supergirl Jam series, with top female skateboarders, inline skaters and snowboarders (yes, snowboarders) competing for a portion of the $36,000 total prize purse.

Athletes will hit the slopes, made possible by 80,000 pounds of man-made snow being brought to the beach, to compete in the snowboarding rail jam. Two-time defending champion Laurie Currier will be on hand to defend her title, facing other top boarders -- including former event medalists Chanelle Sladics and Leanne Pelosi -- determined to thwart a three-peat.

In addition to snowboarding, the event will feature top skateboarding and inline skating pros competing on a custom-built street course designed to challenge their board and rail skills.

This year's Supergirl Jam Skateboard Street contest welcomes the return of the 2008 Supergirl Jam skateboard champion, Lauren Perkins, who was injured in 2009 and didn't compete. Perkins will attempt to recapture the title that Amy Caron claimed last year, also facing tough competition in the likes of 2010 X Games medalists Leticia Bufoni and Alexis Slabone.

Among those riding the rails in the Supergirl Inline best-trick contest will be 2008 Supergirl Jam inline champion Chynna Weierstall, No. 1-ranked Fallon Heffernan and the legendary Fabiola da Silva, whose seven X Games gold medals make her a serious contender at every contest.

Co-sponsored by ASA Entertainment and Warner Bros. Consumer Products on behalf of DC Comics, the Supergirl Jam is the industry's only large-scale, all-girls action-sports competition and features more than 100 of the world's top female action-sports athletes.

"We are very proud to present the Supergirl Jam for its fourth year," said Karen McTier, executive vice president of domestic licensing and worldwide marketing for Warner Bros. Consumer Products. "It's an honor to once again provide an opportunity for these young women to take center stage and be applauded for their talent, dedication and inspiration."

Additional competitions are being planned and will be announced at a later date. Admission to all of the Supergirl Jam events is free.

Event schedule:

How to Do a Hardflip on a Skateboard - Associated Content

Posted: 19 Aug 2010 03:43 PM PDT

Hardflips are considered a pretty advanced trick so if you are unsure or uncomfortable attempting this maneuver, don't. With that said, make sure that you have a good understanding of the shove-it and the kickflip
because the techniques used in these two tricks will serve as helpful in this one. Before we get started, remember that this along with any other trick can lead to injury so make sure that you have all necessary protective equipment on such as a helmet, knee pads, and elbow pads.

Step 1: Believe it or not this trick particularly is difficult to do when you aren't moving so get a good roll going. Position your feet just like you would if you were attempting a shove-it.

Step 2: Now that your feet are positioned correctly, pop the tail of the board up vertically while simultaneously kicking slightly with your front foot and turning your body. Spread your legs so the board flips in between them. Make sure that you jump as high as you can so the board doesn't make contact with your legs.

Step 3: The board, if done correctly, should flip once vertical and once horizontally. Right before the board hits the ground catch it with your feet and bend your knees.

Step 4: Brace the impact of the fall and straiten out.

Hardflips can be one of the more difficult tricks to learn but they are very much a crowd pleaser. Practice first going slow and gradually start picking up more and more speed and in no time at all you'll be doing it over sets. Good luck and happy skating.

Skateboard Art Exhibition Benefits Children’s Skateboard park in Afghanistan - PRLog (free press release)

Posted: 19 Aug 2010 01:20 PM PDT

PRLog (Press Release)Aug 19, 2010 – More than 50 of skateboards will be on exhibit at the Red Bull Loft Space on Friday 20 August 9 pm to midnight to benefit Skateistan, a unique nonprofit organization that teaches girls and boys in Kabul, Afghanistan to skateboard. The exhibition follows an online auction with eBay from August 20-30, 2010, and will raise funds for the year-old organization. Contributors include renowned Islandic artist Olafur Eliasson, New York's up and coming Ernesto Burgos, as well as NYC skateboard artist Shai Dahan.

Tickets can be purchased at: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/ event/122922

Skateistan is Afghanistan' s first co-educational skateboarding school. The school engages 300 internally-displaced youth in urban Afghanistan through skateboarding, and provides them with new opportunities in education, increased access to health services, and youth-led cultural activities. Students are aged 6 to 16 and come from a wide spectrum of Afghanistan' s diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. The curriculum integrates skateboarding instruction with classroom lessons in healthy habits, civic responsibility, information technology, the arts, and English and Dari languages. One of the poorest countries in the world, Afghanistan has few recreational or extracurricular education opportunities for children. Opportunities for girls are still especially limited- they are not allowed to ride bikes or fly kites. Skateistan aims not only to provide these children with much needed recreation, but also to equip young men and women with the skills to lead their communities toward social change and development. The Skateistan facility has two class rooms, provides access to Acer laptops with high-speed internet, photography and drawing classes, CPR training and environmental health lessons.

Skateistan started in a non-functional Soviet-era fountain back in 2007 and was officially established as a local Afghan non-profit in June 2009 by Australian skateboarder Oliver Percovich. His team worked with children across downtown Kabul and an orphanage on the city's outskirts before they raised funds to construct a 5,287 sq. ft. indoor sports facility, Afghanistan' s largest. The land was donated by the Afghan National Olympic Committee and the park opened in November of 2009.

Funds for running and developing Skateistan are raised from donations and from fundraisers held around the world organized by a network of volunteers. Fundraisers in Copenhagen have received several awards as outstanding socially oriented cultural events. The fundraiser at the Red Bull Loft is the first Skateistan fundraiser to be held in New York.

A documentary on Skateistan (Skateistan - The Movie) will be released at the Sundance film festival in 2011 detailing the construction of the school, achievements of its students, and what it's like to grow up in twenty-first century in Afghanistan? .

Skateistan is a registered non-profit organization in the US as well as in Afghanistan, Australia, Germany, and Denmark. Please see: http://us.skateistan.org

Skateistan is Afghanistan' s—and the world's—first co-educational skateboarding school. The school engages growing numbers of urban and internally-displaced youth in Afghanistan through skateboarding, and provides them with new opportunities in cross-cultural interaction, education, and personal empowerment. Our students come from all of Afghanistan' s diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. They will not only develop skills in skateboarding and skateboarding instruction, but also healthy habits, civic responsibility, information technology, the arts, and languages. The students themselves decide what they want to learn—we connect them with teachers who will enable them to develop the skills that they consider important. Since Skateistan has been active in Kabul, we've seen that Afghan youth of all ethnicities, genders, and socioeconomic backgrounds love to skateboard.

How to Do a Boardslide on a Skateboard - Associated Content

Posted: 18 Aug 2010 01:07 PM PDT

Boardslides are often one of the first skateboard slides that people try due to the simplicity of the trick and just how basic they really are. I always like to remind readers to make sure all the necessary protective
gear is on, such as a helmet, knee pads, and elbow pads. Also make sure that you have a basic knowledge of the ollie and 180 ollie because these skills come in handy when learning the boardslide. Always remember to never exceed your skill level; if you don't feel ready, then I can't stress to you enough to practice your basics until you feel you have the skill to attempt this trick without injuring yourself.

Step 1: Position your feet just like you would if you were attempting a 180 ollie. When you first attempt this trick it is important to remember that speed doesn't play as big as a factor than it does in grinds were you slide on your trucks; the actual deck is much more slick and will slide much faster. Approach the rail almost parallel to it and ollie turning your body 90 degrees using mostly just your lower body; your upper body will follow.

Step 2: Once you have made a connection with the rail always make sure that your body is leaned forward. Failure to do so can cause the board to slide out from under you sending you backwards on your head. Balance plays a big part in the boardslide. Try to keep the board as level as you can throughout your slide. The thing about boardslides is once your board connects with the rail you have to be committed, because bailing is much more difficult in this trick than in others.

Step 3: Once you are approximately a foot away from the end start rotating your body inward eventually turning a full 90 degree angle. If timed properly you will be popping off right at the end for a smooth landing. Balance plays a huge role at the landing as well because if you have bad balance, you will either land sloppy or not at all. Also make sure your feet are covering your bolts when you hit the ground.

Top Three Backpacks for Girls - Associated Content

Posted: 02 Aug 2010 04:54 PM PDT

It's August and that means back-to-school. Choosing a sturdy, comfortable backpack for girls can be daunting. There are so many to choose from and many can be very pricey. Below is a reference list of features to look
for in a backpack.

Color and Durability

Young ladies may prefer light girlie colors, but it may not always be the best choice. Backpacks get thrown, dragged, plopped on the ground, sat on, and many times carried over one shoulder. Darker colors will show less dirt and wear. Sturdy zippers with pulls are great. A padded back panel gives support and adds comfort. Shoulder straps should be padded and adjustable to fit your child. Compartments with zippers or dividers are important to help the student keep things organized.

Top three picks for elementary girls Back to School backpacks.

The first is Dakine Girls Wonder Pack, the backpack three-color options available charcoal, black or navy. There are four front panel choices, Pacific Stripe, Plush Plaid, Twilight Plaid or Westwood Plaid, made of 600D Polyester. Features of this bag include, small pouch for sunglasses or other small items such as cell phones, keys, text phones, etc., mesh side pockets, and a convenient bungee storage on the front to hold a jacket or other items. It also comes with a skateboard strap if your child scoots to school. The price point is $23.90 and usually ships within one day from Rocky Mountain Trail. There is no sales tax charged outside of Colorado.

The Children's Place offers an all-season water resistant polyester backpack with reflective piping. The bag has a top grip handle making it easy to pick up from the floor. The bag has a denim padded back panel and has padded shoulder straps, which are adjustable. This pack has a nice roomy lunchbox storage compartment with mesh side pockets. Colors include black, rouge, and white, all patterned. The item is rated 4.8 stars on the website. The bag sells for $15.50.

Welcome to Skateistan: Rochester man empowers Afghan kids with skateboarding - Post-Bulletin

Posted: 12 Aug 2010 06:48 AM PDT

By Jenna Gibson
The Post-Bulletin, Rochester MN Skateboarding is not a traditional sport in Afghanistan. In fact, most Afghans have probably never seen a skateboard in person. But a Rochester man is working to change that.

Ty Cabaya is a volunteer with Skateistan, a nonprofit group working to empower and educate kids in Afghanistan's capital, Kabul, through skateboarding.

"I heard through the Internet and friends that they had just built the skatepark here," Cabaya said. "I was at a point in my life that I had done everything for myself and wanted to give back something to skateboarding and kids and make a difference."

So he packed up and headed to Kabul. He's been there since May and will stay until November, working primarily as the group's manager and accountant.

Helping

Although Cabaya spends a lot of time with finances, he also gets a chance to interact with the Afghan people. For him, that's the best part of the organization.

Giving kids something to do to keeps them off the streets, helps bring them to the classroom and helps them interact with kids from different backgrounds, he said.

"The kids, especially the girls, they are amazing because they don't get these chances … so when they do get the chance … they are super super excited," Cabaya said.

Living

While Ty Cabaya enjoys his work, life in Kabul has been difficult. Constant power outages, scarce running water and poor Internet access have been frustrating, he said.

There's also the violence.

Once, when he was shopping, he heard a suicide bomb go off one street away. And he has learned to avoid military convoys because they are targets for insurgent attacks.

But things are not all bad, he said.

"The news is not completely accurate," Cabaya said. "… many times the news neglects to point out the advances we are making in Kabul, the genuinely nice people that just want the madness to end; the many bright outlooks that are the future of Kabul and how this country is working night and day to make Afghanistan a better place."

Support

When Cabaya's family learned he wanted to volunteer in Afghanistan, they were a bit surprised.

"We kind of looked at him and said, 'Are you nuts?'" his mom, Jane Cabaya, remembered."But there's nothing we could do about it. He wanted to go there and be his own person … He likes what he's doing, so we endorse it."

OCEANSIDE: Teenage girls compete in pro surf contest - North County Times

With glowing skin and sun-streaked hair, 16 of the world's youngest, most-talented female teenage surfers paddled out into the choppy waters just south of the Oceanside Municipal Pier on Saturday to compete in the third annual Supergirl Pro Junior surf contest.

"I think it's really exciting to see people get excited about women surfing," said Honolulu native Carissa Moore, 17, who won the women's final at the U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach last weekend and was on the beach getting ready to compete once again. "My biggest goal is to be world champion, but for now, I am enjoying the journey."

The creators behind the Supergirl Jam series, a multicities' competition that provides girls under 20 a chance to compete in surfing, snowboarding and skateboarding, said they had girls like Moore in mind when they came up with action sports competitions that give the girls a chance to show their stuff.

"We call them 'actionistas,'" said Barry Ziehl, a spokesman for Warner Bros., which helps promote the event, organized by the Association of Surfing Professionals. "Girls in action sports are certainly heroic in their feats, whether it be at snowboarding, surfing or skateboarding. These girls are the embodiment of girl power. These are the girls that are up and coming. They'll be competing for a long time."

Denise Abbott, spokeswoman for ASA Entertainment Group, which oversees the event, said the goal of the Supergirl series is to empower young women. "We want to see these girls get out there and do what they do best," she said.

This was the second year the event has been held in Oceanside, a location that organizers said provides favorable conditions for a smaller surf competition.

Just south of the pier were tents and flags with the signature emblem "S," in the same form as that of the famous comic book superhero but in pastel pink.

All around the tents were girls in wetsuits, lathering sunscreen on their faces, gearing up for what many said were "so-so" surf conditions.

"This is going to be all about patience today," said Ziehl, who's also a surfer.

Oceanside-based professional longboard surfer Kassia Meador, 28, was on the scene as a Supergirl ambassador, volunteering and wishing her younger surf sisters luck.

"We have some of the best surfers in the world out here today," said Meador, adding that she was happy to see the younger girls get a shot at competition and prizes. "This gives them their start, and it gives others something to aspire to be."

Another female professional surfer was also there to show support.

"This is just a competition that has just busted out over the last few years," said Jen Smith, 24, of San Diego. "It's great to see how this is catching on, giving these junior surfers a chance to compete."

“Pedro Barros, 15, takes gold in Skateboard Park at X Games - USA Today” plus 1 more

“Pedro Barros, 15, takes gold in Skateboard Park at X Games - USA Today” plus 1 more

Pedro Barros, 15, takes gold in Skateboard Park at X Games - USA Today

Posted: 01 Aug 2010 09:20 PM PDT

LOS ANGELES (AP) — An X Games dominated by age and experience finally got a dose of youth on closing day.

Fifteen-year-old rookie Pedro Barros beat 37-year-old veteran Andy MacDonald to win Skateboard Park on Sunday at a games previously dominated by repeat winners and older athletes.

Skateboard Park was designed to allow young skaters versed in street style to compete with the older riders of vert ramps, and this year's finals went just according to plan, with all the competitors either teens in jeans or pad-and-helmet-wearing thirty-somethings.

Ryan Sheckler was the youngest winner of this event at 13 in 2003, but the Brazilian Barros becomes the first athlete who wasn't born when the X Games began to win a gold.

He used a combination of stunning 540 airs and grinding slides on the elaborate course at the L.A. Live complex in downtown Los Angeles to reach a final score of 86 out of 100.

Barros said it was "sick" to win gold in his first X Games. He didn't think youth was overtaking age in pro skateboarding just yet, but didn't deny that his youthful exuberance helped.

"We're young, so we get more energy," Barros said of the teens in the final. "We just get more hyped up."

McDonald won silver with a score of 81 and 17-year-old Kevin Kowalski won bronze with a 78.

Earlier in the competition an even younger face, 14-year-old Curren Caples, wowed the crowd and appeared to be on his way to gold.

Weighing 75 pounds with a face that looks closer to 10, Caples inspired Justin Bieber-like screams from young girls in the crowd throughout his seemingly effortless runs that included a 360 frontside air that he had failed to land several times in practice.

But Caples fell frequently, couldn't find his rhythm and was clearly frustrated in the final jam session.

Youth got a boost earlier in the competition when Rune Glifberg, the 35-year-old favorite and defending champion, failed to make the finals.

Before Sunday, most events at X Games 16 saw professional, perfectly executed performances but predictable winners and an absence of new faces.

Jamie Bestwick won gold in BMX Freestyle Vert for the fourth year in a row.

Pierre-Luc Gagnon won his third consecutive gold in Skateboard Vert and added another in Best Trick.

Daniel Dhers won his third gold in four years in BMX Freestyle Park

If anything these X Games were more memorable for things that happened outside the competition:

Travis Pastrana's just-for-the-heck-of-it double back-flip after he had already claimed gold in Freestyle Moto X. The move that was so groundbreaking for Pastrana four years earlier now was tossed off almost casually, with a smile.

Bob Burnquist's repeated attempts, after the ESPN telecast was over and most of the crowd had left the Coliseum, to land an unprecedented 900 on the mega ramp in Skateboard Big Air, risking serious injury just to complete a trick.

— Constant tributes to Mat Hoffman, the BMX pioneer who was flying his bike to ridiculous heights years before the X Games brought money or glory for doing such things. The film telling his story, "The Birth of Big Air," premiered at the games, and briefly put Hoffman back at the center of the action sports world.

— Double gold medalist Tanner Foust and all the other finalists doing doughnuts and making dust clouds at the end of the first-ever SuperRally racing competition.

"Oh my God that was fun," a gleeful Foust said afterward. "It's basically like the coolest video game ever."

It's as though he were writing the X Games' new slogan.

Malibu girl's death prompts safety push on Pacific Coast Highway - Los Angeles Times

Posted: 31 Jul 2010 12:31 PM PDT

Organizer

Pacific Coast Highway is many things to the tens of thousands of people who traverse it daily.

For the day-trippers who park on the shoulder and haul their coolers across the roadway, it's the route to some of the best beaches around. For the "Z drivers" -- commuters who take the canyon roads west over the mountains to PCH en route to Los Angeles -- it's the quickest way to work. For the cyclists who ride along the shoulder, it's a workout and a rush.

For the 13,000 people who call Malibu home, PCH is their main street and the only route through town. And since the death of 13-year-old Emily Rose Shane, a local eighth-grader who was hit by a car that ran off the road as she walked on the shoulder April 3, the locals are sick of sharing it with a world that looks on it as a highway.

Residents gathered this week for a public ceremony for the latest victim, Navy Petty Officer Oscar Avila Mendoza, 23, who died after his car was hit by a speeding wrong-way driver on July 16. The wrong-way driver, James Sorg, also died, and Mendoza's passenger was hospitalized.

Community activists said the five fatalities on PCH in the greater Malibu area so far this year show that despite stepped-up law enforcement and added barriers on the road, the highway is still not safe enough.

"As beautiful as Malibu is, we who live here know firsthand what an ongoing dangerous nightmare the Pacific Coast Highway can be," Julie Eamer, 51, and the mother of three, told Thursday's assembly.

Eamer and two other local "moms with mouths," as they call themselves -- Susan Saul, 48, and Maria-Flora Smoller, 45 -- formed a grass-roots group called A Safer PCH after Emily Shane died. The group now runs an e-mail list with more than 350 subscribers, and its meetings draw dozens of residents.

"This community came together for us when this tragedy happened," said Emily's mother, Ellen Shane.

Born and raised in Malibu, Emily was a happy-go-lucky girl who liked to skateboard and dreamed of one day opening a dance studio. She was walking from a friend's house to meet her father at the shopping center on Heathercliff Road -- a route local kids take frequently, even though there is no sidewalk on that stretch of highway -- when Sina Khankhanian, 27, of Winnetka allegedly drove off the road and hit her.
