Village improves skateboard agreement - The Journal Register (Medina& NY) Posted: 30 Aug 2010 03:09 PM PDT August 30, 2010 Village improves skateboard agreementALBION — The Village of Albion board had good news for skateboarders and Santa Clauses on Wednesday, approving the Town of Albion's offer to help pay for skate park equipment and offering to assist with the upcoming celebration of legendary Santa Claus Charles Howard. The Town of Albion will provide $4,000 in September toward purchasing a quarter pipe for Bullard Park as part of the inter-municipal agreement. A group of skateboarders asked both of Albion's governments for help in improving the park after a grant for equipment was denied. The agreement between Albion's two municipalities will benefit all of Albion's parks thanks to the persistence of the group of skateboarders behind the project, Trustee Kevin Sheehan said. "Because of those kids, this agreement has been reached that will improve not only Bullard Park but also the rest of Albion's parks," said Sheehan, who praised the amount of work done by the skateboarders. "They made this a reality." As part of the agreement the town will provide an additional $6,000 for each year that the agreement is renewed toward parks and recreation projects and appoint a sixth member to the village's recreation committee. Various local governments will also be coming together to help celebrate Charles W. Howard, the Albion farmer who served as the Santa Claus for the Macy's Parade in New York City from 1948 to 1965 in addition to training a generation of St. Nick's at the world's first Santa Claus School. According to Lou Becker, whose Erie Canal Schoolhouse Bed and Breakfast will be "transformed into North Pole Central" for the event, more than 100 professional Santa Clauses will suit up and gather in Albion on Sept. 25 as part of the Charles W. Howard Day festivities. Becker asked the board to consider putting up Christmas decorations for the event. Mayor Dean Theodorakos said the village could put up decorations focused around courthouse square, where the visiting Santas will be performing a special dance. Charles W. Howard Day will also feature an exhibit of the Santa Claus Oath, reindeer for petting and memorabilia from the Howard's Santa Claus School and Christmas Park.
