“Boys & Girls Club is a safe, fun place for kids - DL-Online”

“Boys & Girls Club is a safe, fun place for kids - DL-Online”

Boys & Girls Club is a safe, fun place for kids - DL-Online

Posted: 28 Jan 2011 03:56 PM PST

When asked, kids and adults seem to agree on two words that most describe the Boys and Girls Club of Detroit Lakes — safe and fun.

"It's like a home away from home. It's fun to come here rather than go home and sitting," Lucas Olson, 12, said.

Children are welcome at the Boys and Girls Club every day after school from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Two vans run back and forth for about an hour, picking up kids from all the schools in Detroit Lakes. Ages 12 and up are welcome to go to Grace Lutheran Church (or they can stay at the club), and ages 5-11 hang out at the club.

"It's a break from all the little kids," Dakota Hagen, 14, said. Especially with younger siblings at the club, he added.

With Grace Lutheran Church letting the club use their space, the young teens can watch movies, play pool or ping pong, do homework, go sledding and in the summer, skateboard and other outdoor activities.

The kids all agree, regardless of their age, that they have made new friends because of the Boys and Girls Club. And if they weren't at the club after school, "I'd be at home, sitting, doing nothing," Hagen said.

"I'd be bored," agreed Annalissa Chosa, 12.

At Grace Lutheran, Nikki Hansen serves as supervisor over the teens.

"She's our favorite staff. She's like my second mom," Olson said.

"She's the coolest," agreed Chosa.

"She let's us do anything, as long as it's appropriate," Olson added.

And the feelings seem to be mutual.

Hansen said she did home daycare for a few years and realized she enjoyed working with kids. So, she started working for the club, where she averages 18 kids a day to entertain after school.

"It's been the best job ever I think," she said. "I hope the best for them. I just love these kids so much."

Hansen has two kids of her own in the elementary school, so they hang out at the club, which is convenient for her. Another parent with young kids at the club is Andrew Gag. He has two daughters, ages 9 and 6, who have been going to the club after hearing about the programming and how fun the club is.

"We heard good things about it. Shortly after our first child went there last year, she just loved it, so that's why we kept going back this year," he said.

Gag said his daughter likes the activities and loves bringing projects home.

"I see it as a safe environment to have your kids at after school," he said. "You can really tell the staff enjoys working with the kids, and that's always good for a parent to know that your kids are in a well-structured environment and one that's fun for the kids."

Program Director Tahnee Moe lists free time, Target Service, Power Hour, arts and crafts, computer lab, gym and Smart Moves as some of the programs offered for kids. There is also summer programming for kids.

Membership is $40 a year, and includes transporting the kids to the club after school. Moe said the club averages about 120 kids a day after school, and about 60 kids eat supper at the club too.

At the club where the younger kids hang out, it's the same reasons they started, friends and fun.

"One of my friends was going and liked it so I came," Jacob Hanson, 11, said. Turns out, he likes it too.

He said his favorite part of the Boys and Girls Club is gym time (dodgeball especially) and Tahnee. He gets to see friends from other schools — Roosevelt and Rossman and Holy Rosary kids come — that he normally wouldn't, which is also a bonus of going to the club.

Gracie Kuehl, 9, has been going to the club for four years, and she came with friends as well.

"My friends went here and though it was pretty cool," she said.

She lists sledding and playing outside as her favorite parts of her time at the club, and "I like to go in the gym a lot. There's a lot of fun things to do here."

Dylan Strawsell, 7, has been attending for three years and started coming after his brother had joined and liked it.

"There's a lot of stuff to do," he said.

He too noted that the gym was his favorite place to hang out and play with friends.

"I think it's a great asset to our community," Gag said. "I strongly encourage other parents to bring their kids whenever I get a chance. Our kids just love going there, and they take such good care of the kids. It's a great thing to have for an after school program."

"It's a safe place for kids, they're not bored," Moe said of the club.

"It gives them something to do," Hansen agreed.

"They're not sitting home alone."

Moe said when at the end of the day, a parent has to practically drag their kids out of the club, "we're doing our job. They're cared for. They love coming here."

This is the second in a series on the Boys and Girls Club of Detroit Lakes.

2011-01-23 05:39:22 - ATHENAEUM, a completely new concept in retail skateboard and longboard stores, opened its doors in late November at Hingham's Derby Street Shoppes and offers local skaters a new place to hang and connect with pro skaters and top of the lines decks and hardware.

ATHENAEUM opened its first store located in Boston 18 months ago. The new Hingham location is the beginning of an exciting growth plan for New England. Over the next few years, several stores are projected to open including San Francisco, CA; Huntington Beach, CA; Miami, FL and Denver, CO.

With professional riders at the helm, skaters, as well as

their parents will be able to seek advice on their new set ups from riders they have come to idolize on popular media outlets like YouTube and Vimeo. "Not only can I advise them on their components and then build their board, but I can send them out of the store with a free ATHENAEUM t-shirt signed by me" said Dane Webber, a professional rider for Loaded Boards, who will co-manage the Hingham location.

"We are very excited we will be open just a few short months ahead of Hingham's first skatepark at Bare Cove," said Jeff Brink, Store Manager. "The Derby Street Shoppes is a perfect location for us, just a few miles from the skate park. The newly built park will attract families across the South Shore of Massachusetts and Cape Cod. ATHENAEUM will blend well in the Derby Street community. We are bringing a truly high quality skateboard store to the community."

Professional Riders and Top Brands

The Hingham store will carry a very large skateboard and longboard inventory normally only found at the online stores. More than 15 unique brands of skateboard decks including Plan B, Element, Girl, Foundation and Zoo York will be sold at ATHENAEUM. A huge longboard inventory including Landyachtz, Loaded, Never Summer, ABEC 11, Orangatang, Paris and Retro.

See more information on ATHENAEUM by visiting Twitter @ athenaeumstores, Facebook at www.facebook.com/athenaeumstores, or ATHENAEUM's website at www.athenaeumstores.com.

About ATHENAEUM:
With corporate headquarters in Boston, MA, ATHENAEUM reinvented the skateboard shopping experience by opening its first location in Boston, 18 months ago, exclusively carrying hard goods in quantities and selections only previously found online. From store layout to exceptional customer service, to its lounge inspired atmosphere with its own internet lounge and art gallery, video gaming systems and huge flat screen TVs in each store.

ATHENAEUM is not just a store, but also a hangout, a learning center and a social club for skaters of all ages.

Will the new Beckham addition be a girl? - Daily Echo

Posted: 10 Jan 2011 03:56 PM PST

Will the new Beckham addition be a girl?

SO, team Beckham is expecting another player.

It was announced on Sunday that football star David Beckham and his fashion designer wife Victoria will welcome a new addition to their family in the summer.

It means baby number four for the Beckhams who already have three boys: Brooklyn, 11, Romeo, eight, and five-year-old Cruz.

There was no word of whether the latest addition to the Beckham brood would be a boy or a girl. However, the couple have made no secret in the past they would like a little girl.

Thirty-six-year-old Victoria is thought to have become increasingly broody since her younger sister Louise announced she is expecting her fourth child "Her last scan showed she was expecting a daughter – something the Beckhams yearn for," said a family friend.

David, 35, is equally keen for his sons to have a sister.

After Romeo was born, he said: "I'd love a little girl. I've got two beautiful sons and would like a girl in the future, but we'll see."

Victoria even ditched her diet of sugarsnap peas, carrots and spinach high-carb nosh such as pasta, potatoes, rice and brown bread to boost her energy and ensure the best chances of pregnancy. But the happy news seems to have come out of the blue, especially after Victoria gave an interview in UK Vogue magazine stating: "Maybe one day another baby, but at this stage I think the chances of a girl are quite slim."

Victoria has previously said: "I'm really girlie. I'd love to dress a little girl up."

Of course, it's understandable that one with such a love of fashion should want an heiress to pass her exquisite handbags on to. But what would be the implications for the baby if the Beckhams achieved their wish?

On the one hand, she might be dressed like a little princess as compensation for the years of yearning. On the other she may turn into a bit of a tomboy, tagging along with her brothers on their skateboards or dabbling with a football.

She may even be dressed in her brothers' hand-me-downs. Think that won't happen to an A-lister child? Just look at Shiloh Pitt who has been snapped wearing older brother Maddox's cast-offs.

According to scientists, a girl's brothers have a crucial effect on the woman she becomes. Research shows brothers keep their female siblings on the straight and narrow by stopping them from growing up too quickly. Girls with big brothers also go through puberty later, possibly because of the shared testosterone in a home. It has also been suggested that carrying a boy during pregnancy uses up a lot of a woman's reserves, so that there is less to nourish the next child, whose health suffers as a result.

A 2008 study at the University of Glasgow in Scotland also revealed that older brothers mean smaller siblings – so the fourth Beckham, whatever gender, could be diminutive – and that having an older brother may reduce chances of reproductive success.

Another question begs to be answered: If they do have a son, how will they react?

A trend among expectant mothers has been coined "gender disappointment", where desperation for a particular sex is so strong that they go to great measures to ensure it is conceived, and consider termination if the methods fail.

Willow Smith Previews '21st Century Girl' - MTV

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 08:01 AM PST

Last year, Willow Smith wanted us to whip our hair back and forth, and on her new single, she proclaims to be a "21st Century Girl." The up-and-coming pop star was spotted filming the video for the song, off her Roc Nation debut album, over the weekend.

Willow was joined by her parents, Will and Jada, on the set, as well as her brother Jaden and his "Karate Kid" co-star Jackie Chan. The video was shot over two days in downtown L.A. In the clip, the pint-size pop star was seen in braids and wearing various multi-colored outfits that included neon colors and leopard print.

"Hi, guys! I am on my video set and I just wanted to give you guys a sneak peek of the new sound of my song '21st Century Girl,' " she said in a video posted on Facebook. In the video, Willow rocks bright green eye shadow, and in the background, several of her over-the-top looks can be seen hanging on racks. "So, hope you like it," she said.

"21st-century girl/ I do what I like/ 21st-century girl/ I'm taking you for a ride," Willow sings. The song, much like her first single, "Whip My Hair," is a club-banging anthem. "21st-century girl/ Gonna live it up/ Just live it up," she goes on to sing over the heavily produced beat.

Willow first got everyone's attention last fall when she burst on the scene with her debut single. And she's already got some big projects in the works. She's set to perform at the Grammy Awards on February 13, and she is also going to hit the road with Justin Bieber when he tours Europe starting in March.

What do you think of Willow's new single, "21st Century Girl"? Tell us in the comments.

Spice Girl Emma Bunton Is Engaged - MTV

Posted: 23 Jan 2011 04:02 PM PST

Emma Bunton has found a man who wants to be her lover — forever.

The former Spice Girl, who was also known as Baby Spice during the quintet's late '90s pop reign, tweeted on Sunday (January 23), that she's set to marry her longtime boyfriend, Jade Jones.

"Yahooooo I'm Engaged! Love you Jade! I'm a very happy lady!!" the poptress wrote, tweeting a picture of her showing off a huge sparkler. Bunton and Jones have been together for over a decade and are parents to a three-year-old son named Beau. The duo are also expecting their second child this year. Bunton got tons of e-love from her fellow Spice Girls after announcing the happy news.

"Mrs Jones!!! Congratulations to you both and Beau and Bump. Love you all x x x," Melanie C tweeted. Sporty Spice also sent some e-snaps to Jones, a former member of the boy band Damage. "Go on son!!! Yeah!!!!! I'm so excited x x x."

Mel B tweeted, "Hearing from across the pond you are looking glowing and stunning tonight,as always xxxxxxxx." The pregnant Bunton also showed off her rock on the UK reality competition show "Dancing On Ice," which she judges, on Sunday.

Bunton's engagement comes just days after her birthday, and the singer thanked her Twitter fans for both the b-day love and engagement congrats. "Thank you for all your lovely messages, I haven't stopped smiling for days!!!!"

Bunton's bump and upcoming wedding isn't the only happy family news in Spice World. Earlier this month, Victoria and David Beckham announced they are expecting their fourth child together later this year.

Share your congratulations for the family in the comments!

“Girl Critical after School Shooting Near L.A. - CBS News” plus 1 more

Girl Critical after School Shooting Near L.A. - CBS News

Posted: 18 Jan 2011 10:46 AM PST

(AP)  Updated at 9:37 p.m. ET

LOS ANGELES - A gun in a 10th grader's backpack discharged Tuesday when he dropped the bag, wounding two students at a high school, including one who remained in critical condition, police said.

Both teens were hit with the same bullet, Los Angeles deputy police chief Patrick Gannon said.

John Deasy, deputy superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District, said there was no indication the student with the backpack had touched the gun before it discharged.

"He literally dropped his knapsack on the desk and it went off," Deasy said.

Gannon said the student apologized before running to another classroom.

"He said, 'I'm sorry,' when the gun went off. It made it appear to the teacher that it was an accident," Gannon said.

Still, Los Angeles police Lt. John Pasquariello said it was a crime to bring a gun to campus. The unidentified student was arrested and charges were pending, he said.

"We don't know exactly what happened," Pasquariello said. "Traditionally, guns don't go off without someone's finger on the trigger."

A 15-year-old girl suffered a skull fracture and bruising to the brain and developed a significant blood clot when the bullet grazed her skull.

The blood clot was removed successfully, but the girl remained sedated and in critical condition, said Dr. James Ausman, a neurosurgeon at Los Angeles County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. The girl's family was by her side.

A 15-year-old boy was in fair condition after being shot in the neck in a classroom at Gardena High School, a sprawling, 1950s-era school with rows of barracks-like classrooms

The shooting occurred in a classroom at the school, where Principal Rudy Mendoza said students were on a break at the time. The campus was locked down after the incident. Police initially reported a shooter was at large.

Student Semaj Elan was in an adjacent classroom when the shooting occurred.

"My friend came up to me in the classroom talking about how she almost got shot. They're gonna be traumatized by that," Elan said.

Numerous law enforcement agencies responded to the 2,400-student campus about 15 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.

Nelda Robledo, one of the worried parents who gathered near the school, said her 16-year-old daughter texted her that students were ordered to get down on the ground or hide in a corner after the shooting.

If the student is released on bail, the school will recommend to the district disciplinary office that he be suspended, district spokeswoman Gayle Pollard-Terry said. The office also could recommend expulsion, which would have to be approved by the school board.

Expelled students are referred to the Los Angeles County Office of Education to complete their education.

Shedric Porter, 14, said he was walking past the classroom at the time.

"I didn't see anything, but I heard the shot, and it was really loud," he said. "I stopped. I was scared. Then I thought it was just a book or something hitting the ground, but it was too loud for that."

It's unclear how the student got in with the gun in his backpack, Pollard-Terry said.

Arriving students are checked with security wands on a random basis at Gardena High, she said. No district school is equipped with walkthrough metal detectors.

Several parents said their children had described racial tension at the school.

"There's usually fights everyday, you're going to see blacks against whites and whites against blacks every single day," said Christy Westbrooks, whose 16-year-old daughter attends the school. "Spanish, whites, Samoans - they don't care what race."

Discipline has long been a problem at Gardena, which ranks as one of the district's lowest-performing high schools. Roughly 35 percent of students drop out.

Five years ago, more than 2,000 students were suspended, and 15 students were expelled. Those figures remained high until last year when the number of suspensions dropped to 300 and expulsions to two.

Forming a discipline committee was one of the principal's goals for this year, according to the school's website.

Frantic parents rushed to the school after hearing about the shooting. They paced nervously as they waited behind police tapes for word from their children.

"I've never heard of anything like this before," said Thomas Hill, whose 16-year-old and 18-year-old children attend the school.

Cynthia Cano, 15, said she was in a Mexican-American social studies class when an announcement was made that the school was in lockdown.

"We heard someone got shot. Everyone was freaking out a little," she said in a telephone interview from inside the campus.

Gardena High School was the scene of a shooting in February 2002, when three assailants tried to hold up two students in an outdoor area. Two students were shot.

In the past five years, two students have been expelled for firearms violations at Gardena High.

Texting girl falls into fountain, Microsoft smiles? - CNET News

Some events make us stop and think. Then there are the events that make us stop, think, laugh, and propagate until we can't think of anyone else to send them to. This, surely, is one of those events.

This enthralling video seems to have been posted to several sites (including YouTube), and it's become quite popular. It may well have originated at BuzzFeed, though it was sent to me by a kind reader who enjoys the handle Super2online. And can only hope that it is real. (It certainly seems to be.)

The video shows a girl wandering around a mall, busily texting on her cell phone.

And then, well, she falls into the mall fountain.
