It's a girl's world in 2011 - ESPN.com Posted: 02 Jan 2011 03:58 PM PST The ASP has recently released it's Top 17 women who will surf the ASP Tour in 2011. "With the allocation of the ASP Wildcard, the 2011 ASP Top 17 have been finalized," said Renato Hickel, the ASP World Tour Manager this week, "We have an excellent field of girls on tour and a solid schedule. We are excited for a big year in 2011." As he should be. Whatever your thoughts are on the ASP's Womens Tour, this is an exciting time in Women's professional surfing. Mostly, I am referring to 4-time champ Steph Gilmore getting a real run for her money, this year from 16-year-old rookie, Tyler Wright. Wright is the younger sister of Owen Wright, 20, the 2010 ASP Mens Rookie of the year. She claimed her spot on this upcoming year's tour with a win at the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing, at Sunset Beach, as part of a strong Vans Triple Crown campaign. This winter, she put in a lot of time at Off the Wall, and even took second place at the Vans Dual for the Jewel, which was a one-heat, four woman shootout at Backdoor during the Billabong Pipe Masters. Gilmore, has, of course, won the last four World Titles and three Vans Triple Crowns, completely dominating contemporary women's surfing. But this year, her toughest competition came from second year tour surfer and fellow Aussie Sally Fitzgibbons, and rookie Hawaiian Carissa Moore. Clearly, it's the younger women who are going to pose the biggest challenge to Gilmore, who turns only 23 herself later this month. Gilmore was the victim of a random attack outside her Tweeds Head home last week. Although she suffered a broken wrist and blows to the head, she is expected to be ready to surf again by the start of the ASP season. While the Mens tour underwent dramatic restructuring in 2010, the womens tour did not see the same type of changes. Underneath the ASP World Tour, is the Womens' Star events, which are esentially the old WQS (without the PRIME events that the men surf.) The women did enjoy a bump in prizemoney, however, with the total yearly purse up to $800,000 from $630,000 and a representative on the recently renovated ASP Board. Australian, Jessi Miley-Dyer , 24, got the wildcard slot for 2011, as she returns from a leg injury. The ladies kick off with the Roxy Pro on the Gold Coast, February 26. 2011 Womens ASP Top 17 1.
