Alana Smith will show off her skateboarding skills starting Monday in the Disney show, Next X, which spotlights young, amateur athletes who could be the next extreme sports stars.

The Mesa 9-year-old has been skating for two years. She will attend her second year at a private Mesa school, Kids That Rip, where she gets skateboarding training along with typical school subjects.

Alana was spotted by an ESPN executive at the McDowell Mountain Ranch Skate Park. ESPN, which is owned by the Walt Disney Co., is a partner in the shows production.

Alana and her mom, Ryonna Smith, were flown out for the week-long filming last month at a skate park in Santa Clarita, Calif.

I think she learned her passion for skateboarding has made her available to live out her dream and work with professional skaters, said Smith, who has three younger daughters. It was an amazing opportunity for her.

Alana spent the week skating, getting interviewed, and learning new tricks from professional skateboarder Bucky Lasek, one of Alanas favorites. The athletes had no idea they would be learning from pro athletes.

He has cool tricks, insane back flips and is super nice, Alana said.

Alana was featured on the show with another skateboarder and two BMX bike riders. The kids were given their own wardrobe stylist and trailers where they could play video games and eat snacks.

The best part was skating with my new friends and having a relay race around the whole park, Alana said. It was also cool learning tricks from Bucky. The whole thing was the best.

The young athletes will be shown in six 11-minute shows that will air weekly, ending with a half-hour show in August on the Disney XD channel.

At the end of the show, one of the athletes who learned the best tricks will perform at the nationally-televised X Games 16, which run July 29-Aug. 1 in downtown Los Angeles, said Eric Covert, vice president of creative contents and production of brand marketing for Disney Channels Worldwide.

The goal of the show is to show kids who believe in themselves, Covert said. With the right kind of guidance and encouragement, they may have what it takes to achieve their dreams to their highest level.

Alana is the first female skateboarder featured on the show, which is in its second year. Alana was chosen for the show because of her great enthusiasm for skateboarding, Covert said.

She hasnt done it that long, and yet she is so great, Covert said. She is trying to take it to the next level, and you pick up on that right away.

Alana said she learned from the show that if you work hard, people will notice your talent, and you can live out your dream.

Alana wants to be a professional skateboarder, and hopes that one day she will be known as a good skater, not just a good female skater.

This summer, Alana will attend a skateboard camp in California, go wakeboarding and jet skiing on Lake Powell, and will watch the X Games live.

Alana already has lots of advice for aspiring skateboarders. Always keep your head high and never give up on a trick youre trying, she said. I accomplish everything I try, even if it takes me awhile.

Next X will start airing Monday on the Disney XD premium channel. Check local listings or visit www.disneyxd.com.

Fundraising needed for estimated $100,000 Easton skate park - LehighValleyLive.com

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 08:35 PM PDT

EASTON | About 135 skateboarders of varying ages and skill levels spent more than 10 hours Monday leaping over and sliding across makeshift obstacles at what they hope will become the city's skate park.

"The people who ask, 'Why do we need a skateboard park?' should be here today," Mayor Sal Panto Jr. said.

The Boys & Girls Club of Easton marked National Go Skateboarding Day with a competition at Lower Hackett Park that officially launched fundraising efforts to raise the estimated $100,000 necessary to build a permanent skate park.

Architect Erich Hornung, a longtime skateboarder himself, presented a preliminary sketch plan that divides the city's roughly 13,000-square-foot former inline skating hockey rink in half.

Phase one is a roughly 6,500-square-foot concrete skate park that includes a raised 50-by-36-foot plaza featuring slopes, ledges, stairs, handrails, planters and benches. The design "mimics urban elements in a safe environment," he said.

The remaining space would be dedicated to a BMX course built at a later date when, and if, financing becomes available.

Hornung said he's also working with Bethlehem-based Source Bike Shop on a circuit of dirt BMX trails that could be built as part of phase one. That portion of the project is contingent on what land the city owns and is willing to contribute to the project and efforts by BMX riders to build and maintain the trails, he said.

A concrete park will allow the city and the teens involved in its planning to build exactly the course they want, Hornung said. It will also eliminate the maintenance issues that plagued the city's failed wooden ramp skate park on the South Side.

The biggest issue, however, is raising enough money to build the park. City officials reiterated Easton's pledge of $25,000 from its capital budget, but the remaining very preliminary estimate needs to come essentially from private donations.

State Rep. Robert Freeman, D-Northampton, had previously pledged to seek state grants for the grants.

June 20, 2010

In the heart of every little girl, her daddy is her hero. For a 3-year old Walnut Hill girl found floating lifeless face down in a pool, her daddy truly is her hero.

"I can swim," Maggie Scott, 3, proclaimed Saturday morning, as she showed off her new kittens Max and Ruby.

Like most adventurous children, Maggie thought she could swim, and she decided, when no one was looking, to try. It was a mistake that would alter the lives of her family in a major way.

The afternoon of May 27 was to be a family time. They were headed to a local creek to enjoy the water, but decided to stop at a someone's home in the Bay Springs community to use the pool instead. Maggie had played in the pool with the rest of her family, wearing arm-floats.

When Maggie and her sisters — McKenzie, 13; Madison, 9; and Mary Paige, 7; were done in the pool, it was time for skateboards and Ripstiks. The girls hit the boards, while the adults sat around talking.

Life would change in the blink of an eye.

"Maggie's dead!"

Those were the heart-stopping words that older sister McKenzie screamed when she saw Maggie, floating face down in the pool. Mom and dad, Blair and Chad Scott, raced for the pool. Blair dove in and pulled Maggie out. No one knew how long the little girl had been in the pool.

Chad started CPR.

"My mind went where it didn't need to go while I watched him do CPR,' Blair said, "knowing what could be happening."

With every thrust on his daughter's chest, Chad said he just prayed.

"I keep telling her to come back to us; I kept telling her she was fine," Blair said. "I wanted the nightmare to end; I wanted God to bring my little girl back to me."

Chad continued CPR. One. Two. Three..

"Then I realized I had three little girls standing there, not knowing what was going on. Hit your knees. And pray," she told them. "They cried, they screamed, they prayed."

Chad continued the CPR. Breathe. Chest compressions. One. Two. Three…

Then, there was a cough.

Volunteers from the Walnut Hill Station of Escambia Fire Rescue arrived. Atmore Ambulance sped down the long driveway. LifeFlight landed. Maggie was quickly scooped up by a LifeFlight nurse who ran to the helicopter. Within minutes, she was at Sacred Heart. Blair and Scott were left behind in Bay Springs, not knowing what was happening with their little girl. A family friend drove them to the hospital, where Maggie was still in the emergency room. She was transferred to an intensive care room.

It was a serious situation. A ventilator breathed for Maggie for 28 hours, doctors and nurses standing nearby at the ready. It was a lot for a mom and dad to deal with.

Blair and Chad both knew at the time that Maggie could have permanent disabilities caused by the lack of oxygen to her brain.

"We just gave it to God," Blair said. Their family, their church family…they all prayed. They were joined by perhaps thousands of people they will never know that prayed after reading Maggie's story.

Miracles don't just happen, Chad said. "God works miracles."

There's no doubt in Blair and Chad's minds that there lives were changed in a big way by the whole ordeal. For Chad, it meant being saved and accepting his Savior all over again.

"I thought I got saved before, but I realized," he said, "and I made a promise to do what He needs me to do."

A few weeks after the accident, Maggie is a vibrant little girl, with no obvious lasting impact from her ordeal.

"We have blueberries," she said Saturday morning as she walked through the family's backyard in search of a cool, shady place for the photos on this page. "They are purple," she observed. "They are not blue."

She smiles and grabs a dandelion, blowing it into the wind toward Chad, very much to her delight. It was a prelude to her big Father's Day plans.

"Guess what I am going to do to you for Father's Day?" she asked Chad. Her grin grew bigger as she put her hands behind her back and twirled around. "I'm going to throw a flower at you!"

The family specifically asked us to offer their thanks to: the Walnut Hill Fire Department (Chris Brown, Kevin Mininger, Dennis Rigby, Gerry Steege, Tab Jernigan, Bill Eubanks, Brian Rolin, Chad Rigby, Johnathon Koehn, Diann Stewart); Atmore Ambulance (Dianna Chavers, Tom Benner); and the LifeFlight Crew (Tom Bruner, Angie Finkel, Norman Lacsamana).

Posted: 17 Jun 2010 01:38 PM PDT

WEST VALLEY CITY — An Amber Alert issued Thursday afternoon for a young girl was canceled after police say she may not have been missing after all.

A woman reported that around 10 a.m. on northbound 5600 West near 5000 South, she saw a dark-skinned male exit the passenger side of a white or light-colored, four-door car and pluck an 8- to 9-year-old girl "football style" off her skateboard and put her in the back of the car, West Valley Police Capt. Tom McLachlan said.

McLachlan said the police department wanted to "err on the side of caution" and devoted as many resources as possible to finding the girl before calling off the Amber Alert at 10 p.m. McLachlan said there was only one witness to the incident, and there have not been any reports of a missing child.

The vehicle, described as an 1980s or 1990s model white sedan, continued to head north, with the woman following them until she lost them somewhere in West Valley City. She was able to get a partial license plate number of 977OJ or 977AJ, and police are trying to run the numbers with vehicles that match the description.

The girl was described as blonde, wearing a blue, knee-length sundress with sandals. The witness reported that there were two Hispanic men, about 30 years old, in the vehicle. The witness described the kidnapper as 6-foot tall, about 180 pounds, with short black hair and wearing a white shirt and blue jeans.

Police are still asking anyone with information to call 801-743-7000.

The packed house braved temperatures reaching 90-degrees to watch the 12 finalists battle it out for skateboarding's largest prize purse. The stage for the competition was a brand new skater-designed street course incorporating features modeled after iconic NY skate spots such as the Brooklyn Banks and the Flushing Meadows ledge over the grate.

Once again, Chris Cole came out to win, landing a backside 270 lipslide on the 9-stair rail, a front blunt to fakie and a huge switch 360 flip. P-Rod and Cole were neck-and-neck throughout the finals and P-Rod's switch frontside smith grind on the big rail and a perfect switchflip on the 9-stair rail made it a historic race for NY's first-ever Maloof Money Cup title. Third place finisher and Tech Deck Best Trick winner Torey Pudwill landed an amazing backside smith grind up the 3-stair hubba that moved the crowd to its feet and Frenchman Bastien Salabanzi amazed the crowd with some truly inspiring skateboarding.
