Flashing emergency lights marked the scene of a tragedy Wednesday night in a Cape Coral neighborhood where, hours before, two young girls had been playing on a skateboard.

One of the girls was killed and the other injured when they were struck by a pickup.

The two girls, ages 5 and 8, were riding the skateboard down a driveway in the 800 block of Northeast 11th Terrace when the truck hit them at about 7:45 p.m., according to Capt. Lisa Barnes of the Cape Coral Police Department.

The 5-year-old girl died at the scene. The 8-year-old was taken to HealthPark Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Barnes said it appears the girls were lying flat on the skateboard as it went down the driveway.

The girls hadn't been identified Wednesday night while authorities tried to notify family members.

The pickup driver, 27-year-old Jacob Aaron Amann, was traveling west on Northeast 11th Terrace when his 2004 Ford F-150 pickup truck apparently struck the girls.

No charges have been filed, although Barnes said the accident is still being investigated.

The 5-year-old girl's death marks Cape Coral's fifth traffic fatality this year.

The last fatal Cape crash also involved a child.

Ryan Michael Santos, 13, was hit by a car and killed April 28 as he tried to cross Del Prado Boulevard on his bicycle.

On Wednesday night, 57-year-old Mark O'Loughlin saw the 5-year-old girl in what would be her final moments.

O'Loughlin, who lives on Northeast 8th Place, was eating dinner outside with his family when he heard a loud crash.

He ran to the scene and saw a child lying motionless on the ground next to the skateboard.

"I went out there and looked at that - it made me sick," O'Loughlin said.
