WEST VALLEY CITY — An Amber Alert issued Thursday afternoon for a young girl was canceled after police say she may not have been missing after all.

A woman reported that around 10 a.m. on northbound 5600 West near 5000 South, she saw a dark-skinned male exit the passenger side of a white or light-colored, four-door car and pluck an 8- to 9-year-old girl "football style" off her skateboard and put her in the back of the car, West Valley Police Capt. Tom McLachlan said.

McLachlan said the police department wanted to "err on the side of caution" and devoted as many resources as possible to finding the girl before calling off the Amber Alert at 10 p.m. McLachlan said there was only one witness to the incident, and there have not been any reports of a missing child.

The vehicle, described as an 1980s or 1990s model white sedan, continued to head north, with the woman following them until she lost them somewhere in West Valley City. She was able to get a partial license plate number of 977OJ or 977AJ, and police are trying to run the numbers with vehicles that match the description.

The girl was described as blonde, wearing a blue, knee-length sundress with sandals. The witness reported that there were two Hispanic men, about 30 years old, in the vehicle. The witness described the kidnapper as 6-foot tall, about 180 pounds, with short black hair and wearing a white shirt and blue jeans.

Police are still asking anyone with information to call 801-743-7000.
